In this video I’ll go over a hard-wired security system upgrade including some things you may want to think about if you are considering an upgrade.

I’ll demonstrate how to replace a main panel and motion detector. We’ll also go over information about changing out your keypad, smoke detector and door/window contacts.

This video may be helpful if you have an existing security system you’re thinking about upgrading. Some reasons you may want to upgrade would be for cosmetic reasons, the ability to add wireless devices, or the ability to self monitor your system, among others.

  1. Excellent video Kyle! Very helpful to get a diy'er started. My system is around 10 years old now. From watching this video, I'm guessing the only way to "upgrade" any components to a security system is to completely replace the circuit boards. I am in the IT world and am used to being able to, most of the time, upgrade versions on the same circuit board (i.e. – drivers) from one version to another. Is that not possible on these security systems? For example, if my keypad is an RFK5500 v1.2…is there any way to upgrade it to v1.3 without having to replace it with a new v1.3 keypad? If not, I will have to buy a entire new keypad? Also, is there any benefit of v1.3 vs 1.2 for this keypad…is it worth buying a new one? Continued thanks for your videos and advice sir.

  3. Thank you! I was a little nervous about changing this because of the warnings on the battery about the risk of fire or explosion… and even when I called my alarm company, the tech said to “be careful that the wires don’t touch, and that you hook up the red to red and the black to black.” Your video put me at ease that I could do this, and it was fast and easy! Thanks!

  4. hi, i have adt galaxy series alarm panel. My contract is over and I don't want to give any money. For him to call me in case of any situation where I will connect an automatic dialer. my question is, is there an alarm tamper detection status when the water panel is on? I do not have an engineer password, only the password I used for the login and logout given to me. I wonder if this password will solve the name?

  5. I used to install security for the company with the red logo. I just kept the batteries that were "dead". Now I use them for the underglow of my car…lol
